The Four Oil Types Available on the Market Today

It’s easy to know the best motor oil for your car, truck, or C/SUV; pull the owner’s manual out of the glove compartment to see what your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends. This is the oil type you should use. The owner’s manual will also specify the preferred weight, which is good information to have. Boulevard Auto Repair can replace your vehicle’s oil whenever it needs. Let’s talk about the different types of motor oil on the market that are available for your automobile.

Conventional

Conventional motor oil wins the popularity contest; it is the most-used oil on the market. Conventional motor oil has been around for over a century, so you know it’s reliable, tried, and true. For standard engines, conventional motor oil is the perfect motor oil. You can keep the oil viscous so you know that it is protecting the engine by having the conventional oil changed every 3,000 miles. If you do not drive 3,000 miles in six months, have the oil changed then.

High-Mileage

Once your standard engine reaches 75,000 miles, it is a good idea to switch to high-mileage motor oil. This motor oil is conventional oil with additives designed to protect older engines better. For example, you may not know this but older engines are prone to oil leaks. The high-mileage motor oil has an additive to help prevent these damaging oil leaks. This means you’ll get more life out of your engine because there is less risk of an oil leak that could render the engine useless.

Synthetic

You’ve noticed we’ve been saying “standard” engines above. This is because most vehicles are equipped with standard engines. If you drive a high-performance automobile, however, you’ll want to keep synthetic motor oil in the engine. Synthetic oil is manmade and contains additives that are designed to stand up to heat better. The oil also stands up to freezing temperatures better. High-performance engines run hotter and, as such, need an oil that can withstand the extreme conditions.

Synthetic Blend

Finally, you may be looking for an oil that provides the best of both worlds. If this is the case, a synthetic blend is the perfect oil for you. As you have likely figured out, this blend combines conventional and synthetic motor oils to give your engine the protection that it needs at a cost in between the two oil types. This can save you money yet still give you synthetic oil benefits.
