Grinding
For example, if the engine is grinding, you may have a low level of motor oil in the engine. If you continue to drive the vehicle without enough motor oil, the parts will continue to grind against each other and wear down. This causes unnecessary and, in some cases, irreparable engine damage.
Knocking
If the engine is knocking, you may have worn rod bearings in the cylinder block. Consequently, when this happens, the rods are unable to move the pistons up and down inside the cylinders without the pistons making contact with the cylinder walls. This can cause irreparable damage to the cylinder block.
Popping
If the engine is popping, you likely have an exhaust manifold with a crack in it. The popping noise that you hear is the sound that the exhaust makes when it leaks out of the crack. The best time to hear this noise is when you first start your automobile. The popping may also sound more like tapping.
Rumbling
If the engine is rumbling, you have another type of exhaust system problem. One of the most common things that will make an engine rumble loudly is a hole in the muffler. In addition, the engine will rumble loudly if you have had the catalytic converter stolen from underneath your automobile.
Sizzling
If the engine is sizzling, you probably have a fluid leak. The sizzling sound that you hear is the noise of the fluid sizzling when it drips onto hot auto parts. Alongside the sizzling noise, you may also hear the engine hissing. If the engine is only hissing, you probably have a leaking vacuum hose under the hood.
Squealing
Finally, the accessory belt in the engine will squeal if it is loose and needs to be tightened. It can also get too loose if the tensioner or pulley needs to be replaced. The most common time you will hear the engine squeal is when you first ignited. The squealing sound may or may not stop when the engine is running.
