Signs My Car’s Engine Needs to Be Replaced

Constant Knocking

One sign that your engine needs to be partially rebuilt at a minimum is constant knocking while you are driving. This is an indication that the rod bearings are worn and the pistons are crashing against the cylinder walls. It takes a partial engine rebuild to replace the rod bearings, but if you don’t act quickly, you may end up with damaged cylinders, as well.

Constant Overheating

Your engine may need to be partially rebuilt or replaced if it is overheating constantly. If a cracked engine block is causing the overheating, we will need to replace the engine. If you have a cracked head gasket, we can rebuild the engine to replace the gasket. Finally, the constant overheating may be your car telling you that it needs a new cooling system.

Excessive Exhaust

Excessive exhaust flowing out of the tailpipe is caused by a serious fluid leak in the engine. We are talking a fluid hemorrhage. If you look at the exhaust carefully, you will be able to tell what fluid is leaking by the color of the exhaust. If the exhaust is white, your engine is leaking coolant. Blue exhaust means the engine is leaking oil. Black exhaust points to fuel.

Metal Shavings

Your engine is disintegrating if you see metal shavings in the motor oil. This is not something that we can repair. In fact, it’s not something that any auto shop to repair. A disintegrating engine needs to be replaced with a new one. If you drive an older automobile, check your motor oil regularly to make sure there are no metal shavings in it.

Power Loss

Finally, your engine may have a hard time producing power if it is going bad. This is a sign that the engine is too old and it needs to be replaced. Your engine will reach the end of its lifespan eventually, and when this happens, it may no longer be able to produce power.
