How the Color of Transmission Fluid Affects Your Automatic Transmission

Your automatic transmission fluid is also called transmission oil. Either, is an accurate description of this crucial automotive fluid. The transmission fluid is a hydraulic fluid that aids the automatic transmission in shifting gears. It’s also a lubricant, which is why some people refer to it as an oil. It lubricates internal transmission parts, including the gears, to ensure they are clean and do not overheat. Boulevard Auto Repair explains below why the color of your vehicle’s transmission fluid indicates how well it is working.

Red Means it’s New and Doing a Good Job

New transmission fluid is red. Some people even describe the color as bright red. This fluid is clear, i.e. translucent so you can see through it, and slick to the touch. Red transmission fluid means the fluid is doing a good job of lubricating the transmission and assisting in the gear changes. Red fluid does not need to be changed.

Light Brown Means it’s Getting Old

Light brown transmission oil means the fluid is getting older but it’s still working okay. Usually, as the transmission fluid ages, it turns from red to reddish-brown and then to light brown. Once the fluid reaches this color, you don’t need to have your transmission fluid changed right away but plan to have it changed soon.

Brown Means it’s Old and Must Be Changed

The light brown transmission fluid will eventually turn dark brown. Once it reaches this color, it becomes more difficult to see through the fluid because the fluid is starting to oxidize. This is when the transmission fluid needs to be changed. If you continue to drive with the fluid in this condition, you risk damaging your transmission.

Black Means it’s Damaging Your Transmission

If you continue to drive with the fluid in this condition, it will also turn black because it will oxidize completely. At this point, you will likely begin to experience problems with your automatic transmission, including problems getting it into gear and shifting between gears. Black transmission fluid is damaging your transmission. It’s crucial to have it changed right away.

Pink Means Your Transmission Needs Replacing

Finally, pink transmission fluid is also a sign of death. Transmission fluid is never pink and less it is being diluted by another automotive fluid. In this case, the diluting fluid is your engine’s coolant. This is a sign that there is a serious leak in your engine and, most likely, your transmission will need to be replaced. You may also have severe cooling system damage.
