Help! My Car Isn’t Shifting Through the Gear Cycle!

If your automobile isn’t shifting through the gear cycle, or if it is slipping out of gear, this is a sign that your automatic transmission is in serious need of maintenance or repair. Boulevard Auto Repair also advises that you may notice that the transmission skips gears rather than going through each gear in the cycle. Aside from these signs, we are going to list the other signs of transmission problems below.

Burning Odors

Sometimes, the transmission will not shift through the gear cycle properly because it is low in transmission fluid. If you don’t have your transmission fluid changed every 30,000 miles, it can get too low. Aside from the gear shifting problems, your transmission will also overheat because the fluid is too low. You will detect burning odors coming from underneath your automobile.

Leaking Red Fluid

If the transmission is leaking fluid, this, naturally, will reduce its level. Transmission fluid tends to leak toward the center of your automobile underneath it. The fluid is red and translucent, although it can be brown if it is old. Getting the leak fixed as soon as possible is crucial to maintaining the health of your transmission.

Shaking/Vibrating

Another sign of transmission problems is shaking or vibrating as the vehicle shifts gears. As you know, the gear shifts are generally quite smooth. There is a difference in your engine’s RPMs, but other than that, you don’t really feel the gear shifts. If you do, there’s a problem with the transmission that needs to be addressed.

Strange Noises

Strange noises coming from your transmission also indicate a transmission problem. You should never hear clunking, grinding, humming, or squealing whether the vehicle is in neutral or in gear. If you hear any of these sounds, give us a call right away because your transmission is in desperate need of service.

Unresponsiveness

The transmission can also become unresponsive when it is having problems. In other words, you may put your vehicle into gear but nothing will happen. It won’t go into Drive, and it won’t go into Reverse. Rather, the vehicle will remain in Park or Neutral.

Check Engine Light

Finally, the problems listed above are often accompanied by a check engine light warning on your dashboard. The check engine light is accurate in detecting problems with your vehicle’s engine, so take the warning light seriously when it turns on.
