European Automobile Fuel System Problems

One of the things that European automobiles are known for is efficiency. These vehicles tend to get better gas mileage than other makes and models because Europeans don’t want to spend a ton of money on gas. Gasoline, including diesel fuel, can be much more expensive in Europe than it is in the U.S. This is why the fuel systems are designed to be efficient. Boulevard Auto Repair advises these systems aren’t invincible, however, here is a list of common fuel system problems we fix every day.

Clogged Fuel Filter

The fuel filter should be changed every 30,000 miles or two years, whichever comes first. This filter is critical in ensuring that the diesel fuel or gasoline that flows into the combustion chamber is as pure as possible. Fuel is filtered twice to remove contaminants, debris, and naturally-found sediment. If you fail to change your fuel filter when it needs it, this debris will clog it and restrict fuel flow into the engine.

Clogged/Cracked Fuel Injectors

The fuel injectors are what spray the fuel into the combustion chamber. They, too, can become clogged. Fuel injectors can be clogged by debris if the fuel filter is clogged, but more likely, they will be clogged by carbon deposits. This is a natural occurrence when burning fuel. As they age, the fuel injector bodies can crack, and this will leak gasoline into your engine. You will notice a reduction in your fuel economy.

Cracked Fuel Hoses

The fuel hoses do the obvious job of delivering the fuel throughout your engine. As they age, they can crack because they are generally made of rubber. Even though the rubber is reinforced, old fuel hoses will eventually crack, and you’ll end up with a fuel leak. It’s important to have all of your engine’s hoses inspected manually and the ones that need it, including the fuel hoses, replaced.

Dying Fuel Pump

The fuel pump is responsible for powering the fuel to the fuel injectors. It pulls the fuel out of the tank, pushes it through the double filtration, and then delivers it to the injectors. The most common problem with a fuel filter is a dead motor. This usually happens if your European automobile has 100,000 miles or more on it. The motor can also overheat if there isn’t enough fuel in the tank to cool it.
